To arrive at the composition of that Alkahest, we begin by laboring at the science of the union of the four Elements which are to be educed from the three Kingdoms of Nature, Mineral, Vegetable, and Animal; the rule, measure, weight, and equipoise whereof have each their key.

To work on universal matter, use the internal and external fire: the four elements result, the Principia Principiorum and Inmediata; Fire, Air, Water, Earth.

Hence the Hebrew name of Deity, as known and worshipped in this outer world, was the great unspeakable name of four letters or Tetragrammaton, whilst the cardinal points of space are also four, and every manifested thing is a compound of the four basic metaphysical elements called by the ancients fire, water, air and earth.
"Water" represents the psychic nature; "Air," the mentality; "Fire," the will and nervous force; whilst "Earth" is the condensation in which the other three become stabilized and encased.
The builder's square, however, used as a Craft symbol, is really an approximation of a triangle with its apex downwards and base upwards, which is a very ancient symbol of the soul and psychic constitution of man and is known as the Water Triangle.
The Fire Triangle gradually assumes preponderance over the Water Triangle, signifying that the Aspirant becomes a more vividly living and spiritually conscious being than he was at first.
By which is implied that it is one specially involving the use of the psychic and higher intellectual nature (denoted, as previously explained, by the Square or Water Triangle).
It is said to denote "in plenty" and to be illustrated by an "ear of corn near to a fall of water" (which two objects are literally the meaning of the Hebrew word in question).

In the terms of ancient philosophy all created things are composed of fire and water; fire being their spiritual and water their material element, and so the pillars represented also these universal properties.
In one of the Apocryphal Scriptures (2 Esdras, 7; 7-8), the path to true wisdom and life is spoken of as an entrance between a fire on the right hand and a deep water on the left, and so narrow and painful that only one man may go through it at once.
If they remained obscure and anonymous, so that the modern student's research is unable to identify them, it is only what is to be expected, for the true initiate is one who never proclaims himself as such and is content ever to remain impersonal and out of sight and notoriety, planting his seed for the welfare of his fellow men indifferently and leaving others to water it and God to give it increase.
It may interest to be told why, at a certain stage of progress, the candidate is likened to an ear of corn by a fall of water; but the explanation will be forgotten to-morrow, unless as the result of his own effort the hearer has become personally aware of an inward substantial growth ripening to harvest within him from the ground of his own being and fertilized by supersensual nourishment falling like the gentle rain from heaven upon his ardent and aspiring soul.

Woman

For though he was Eternal Son of Man, he humbled himself to be born of Woman, to endure the pain and afflictions incident to human nature and finally to suffer a cruel and igominious death upon the cross; it is absolutual of that faith which will conduct you safely over the dark gulf of everlasting death, and land your enfranchised spirit in the peaceful abodes of the Blessed.

CONCEPTION IN THE MOON--
The conception, or woman, rising in the moon, demonstrated the purity that matter subsists of, in order to remain in it's pure state unmixed with any other body, rom which must come a new king, and a revelotion or fulness of time filled with glory who's name is Albra.

These two columns of the Temple, contraries like Man and Woman, like Reasonable Faith, Omnipotence, and Liberty, Absolute Power or Strength; to do what is most unjust and unwise and Absolute Wisdom that makes it impossible to do it; Right and Duty.
Therefore, it was that they made of the Sun and the Moon, emblems of the two creative forces; therefore, that they ascribed to woman the Temptation and the First Sin, and then the first labor, the maternal labor of the redemption, because it is from the bosom of the darkness itself that we see the light born again.
He rakes up the sinner and the Sanatarian Woman, and teaches them to have Hope and Forgiveness. He pardons taken in adultery.
With the gentleness of woman, they soften the pains of the dying, and feed the lamp of life in the convalescent.
Aleph is the man; Beth is the woman. Woman is man's creation; and universal creation is the female of the First Principle.
So in their language, gold and silver are the King and Queen, or the Sun and Moon, Sulphur, the flying eagle, Mercury, the Man-Woman, winged, bearded, mounted on a cube, and crowned with flames, Matter or Salt, the winged dragon, the Metals in ebullition, Lions of different colors; and finally, the entire work has for its symbols the Pelican and Pheonix.
The two figures surmounted by a Cross are two Vases, Nature and Art, in which consumated the double marriage of the White Woman and the Red Servitor, from which marriage will spring a most potent king.

The poor, lost, scorned, abandoned, outcast woman will without expectation of reward, nurse those who are dying on every hand, utter strangers to her, with a contagious and horrid patience. The pickpocket will scale burning walls to rescue child or woman, unknown to him, from the ravenous flames.
To say to man and woman, "Your heroism, your bravery, your self denial, all comes to nothing; your nobleness will do you no good, you will die, and your nobleness will do mankind no service; for there is no plan or order in all these things; everything comes and goes by the fortuitous concoarse of atoms; did not., nor ever will, long satisfy the human mind."
All over the world there is heroism unrequitted, or paid with misery, vice on thrones, corruption in high places, nobleness in poverty, or even in chains, the gentle devotion of a woman rewarded by brutal neglect or more brutal abuse and violence; everywhere want, misery, over-work, and under-wages.
Yet the great Master of Virtue did not so; but descended to familiar interco?rse with publicans and sinners, with the Samaritan Woman, with the outcasts and pariahs of the Hebrew world.
Tempted by Ahriman, the first man and woman had fallen, and for twelve thousand years there ws yo be war between Ormuzd and the Good Spirits created by him, and Ahrimsn and the evil ones whom he called into Existence.
Chapter 6
INTELLIGENCE
To this source we must credit the distribution, in every land, and among every people, of the same equivalent symbols practices and doctrines, modified only locally and in accordance with intelligence of particular peoples, yet all manifesting a common purpose root and purpose.
Similarily human intelligence is valuable or negligible according as it is enlightened by the Master Light of the Divine Principle, or merely darkly functioning from it's own unillumined energies.
And, Masonically, the "sun" stands for the illuminated human intelligence and understanding which results from material brain mind being thoroughly permeated and enlightened by the Spiritual Principle; it denotes these two in a state of balance and harmonious interaction, the Junior Warden personifying the balance point or meeting place of man's natural reason and spiritual intuition.
What is implied, then, is the lesser lights of the candidates normal finite intelligence are employed to reveal to him the greater lights of fundamental essences of his as yet undeveloped being.
During all the disciplined and labour involved in attaining this stability there has shone light on the path from the first moment that his Apprentice's vision was opened to larger truth; light from the science and philosophy of the Oracle itself which is proving his "porchway" to the ultimate sanctuary within; light from friendly hellers and instructors; above all, light from the sun in his own "heavens", streaming through the intelligence and slowly but surely guiding his feet into the way of peace.
All which implies that, in the strength of me rely his natural temporal intelligence mancan find and know nothing more in this world than shadows, images and phenomenal forms of realities which abide eternally and noumenally in the world of Spirit to which faculties are presently closed.
It provides me with the means of overcoming new light and conciousness.
The elaboratedness od it's organization, the care and admirable control of it's affairs by it's higher authorities, are praise worthy in the extreme, whilst in the conduct of it's individual Lodge there has been progressive endeavor to raisethe standard of ceremonial workto a far higher degree of reverance and intelligence than was perhaps possible under conditions existing not long ago.
Chapter 7
The Sphinx, as the epitome of mystery and hidden secrets, has endured for centuries. Her riddle--"what goes on four feet in thr morning, on two feet at mid-day, and on three feet in the evening?"--may have been answered long ago, but mankind is still fascinated by her, and true significance that lies behind her implacable expression can only be guessed at.
The sphynx was a symbol. To whom has it disclosed its inmost meaning? Who knows the symbolic meaning of the pyramids?
They are unfolded in the higher Degrees. The lion [???, ????, Arai, Araiah, which also means the altar] still holds in his mouth the key of the enigma of the sphynx.
To reconcile the moral law, human responsibility, free-will, with the absolute power of God; and the existence of evil with His absolute wisdom, and goodness, and mercy,--these are the great enigmas of the Sphynx.
These lessons of the olden time were the riddles of the Sphynx, tempting the curious by their quaintness, but involving the personal risk of the adventurous interpreter.
It supplies to the Adept the last word of the human Sciences, and the Key of the Divine Power: but he alone understands how to avail himself of it who comprehends the necessity of never revealing it. If Œdipus, in place of slaying the Sphynx, had conquered it, and driven it into Thebes harnessed to his chariot, he would have been King, without incest, calamities, or exile.
